Since February 2026, a fund house can run both a value fund and a contra fund, as long as their portfolios overlap by no more than 50%. Here is how value, contra and focused funds really differ, why style cycles matter, and how to decide whether one belongs in your portfolio.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a value fund and a contra fund?

A value fund buys stocks that look cheap against fundamentals such as earnings or book value. A contra fund buys stocks or sectors the market currently dislikes, betting on a change in sentiment. The two often own similar stocks. Since SEBI’s 26 February 2026 circular, an AMC can run both, provided their portfolios overlap by no more than 50%.

How many stocks can a focused fund hold?

A maximum of 30, under SEBI’s categorisation rules. It must invest at least 80% of total assets in equity and, since February 2026, state whether it focuses on multi-cap, large-cap, mid-cap or small-cap companies. Many focused funds hold 25–30 stocks, with the top 10 often forming a large share of the portfolio.

Are value funds good for long-term SIP?

They can be, if you accept long periods of underperformance. Value styles move in cycles that can last several years. An SIP spreads your entry across those cycles, but it only helps if you keep going through the lagging phases. Treat a value fund as a complement to a diversified core, not as your only equity fund.

Is a focused fund riskier than a flexi-cap fund?

Generally, yes. With 30 or fewer stocks, each stock has a bigger effect on returns. A flexi-cap fund holds more stocks and can also shift across company sizes. Risk also depends on the focused fund’s stated market-cap focus: a small-cap focused fund carries both concentration and small-company risk.

Can an AMC have both a value fund and a contra fund now?

Yes. Under SEBI’s circular of 26 February 2026, a fund house may offer both, as long as the portfolio overlap between them does not exceed 50%. AMCs must also disclose overlap between their equity schemes monthly on their websites, so you can check how different the two funds really are.

How are value and focused funds taxed?

As equity-oriented funds. Gains on units held up to 12 months are taxed at 20%. Gains on units held longer are taxed at 12.5% on the amount above ₹1.25 lakh a year, across all your equity gains. IDCW payouts are taxed at your slab rate.

Should I own value, contra and focused funds together?

Rarely. Holding all three alongside a flexi-cap or large-cap fund usually leads to heavy overlap and an unwieldy portfolio. For most investors, one style fund next to a diversified core is enough. Check overlap before adding any new fund.

Do your funds overlap more than you think?

A style fund only helps if it adds something your core does not already own. Talk to Money n Wealth for a free portfolio review.
